A walk celebrating women’s history in the city...

Suffragettes1

A walk celebrating women’s history in the city, beginning near the Music Hall, the site of a suffragette protest in 1913, and we introduce the lives of famous and not-so-famous females including Mary Garden, opera singer, Joan Eardley, artist, Mary Webb, pianist, Duchess Jean Gordon, Tory party girl and recruting "sergeant" for the Gordon Highlanders, Aberdeenshire's home regiment, Katherine Rolland Guild, medieval philanthropist, and end with a trip back in time to when Winston Churchill met his match with some local suffragettes in 1912.  And, find out who Aberdeen’s “four Maries” were!

Now including the fantastic mosaics of artist, Carrie Reichardt, who created three works on the theme of "Suffragette Spirit" for Nuart Aberdeen 2018.  These feature more recent heroines like Sheena Blackhall, poet, Dr Mary Esslemont and journalist Caroline Phillips, also commemorating those who were executed for witchcraft in the big purge of 1596-97.  These ceramic celebrations serve to highlight in a more permanent manner HER-story in Aberdeen.
