Dr Fiona-Jane Brown, M.A.(Hons); Dip.(LIS); M.Litt.; Ph.D.

Founder, Director and Head Guide

'Hidden Aberdeen Tours was started to fire people up about their local history, and so far it is clear that given the chance, most Aberdonians still love their city and are delighted that someone is showing an interest.  We want to work along with other local organisations, especially the council's cultural services as we are all in the same business, that of building up Aberdeen's profile locally and across the world.  We hope it is going to be a profitable relationship!'

Dr Fiona-Jane Brown, folklorist, educator and storyteller, began Hidden Aberdeen Tours as a response to the deep concern of locals about the increasing industrial and business development situation in the city - the real fear that Aberdeen's history will be lost forever, and that there is no civic pride left in the once lauded 'Silver City with the Golden Sands'. Fortunately there is enough left of our built history in order to tell the stories of the past and re-ignite passion for local culture. Her passion for local history has now found its ideal outlet with this venture.

Dr Brown holds a PhD in Ethnology, gained in 2010 after study at the Elphinstone Institute, Aberdeen's unique centre for the study of North-East Scottish folklore.   Previous to this she worked as the Force Curator for Grampian Police; Project Officer for the Formartine Oral History Project and from 1999 to 2006, an information technology instructor at Aberdeen College.  She volunteers with the Aberdeen Urban Studies Trust, and has worked as AV technician supporting many of the Elphinstone Institute's conferences including the International Ballad Conference and 2010's Harlaw 600 Conference.

As a chartered librarian who has worked in both academic and public library services, Dr Brown is passionate about literature, especially historical material written from a personal perspective.  She is also a keen advocate of oral history, having been an active member of the former Aberdeen Oral History Association (AROHA) which specialised in training and supporting local groups involved in reminiscence projects.  Dr Brown is an independent researcher into Scottish folklore and has presented papers at the Folk Lore Society conference for many years.

Dr Brown's publications include the popular "Hidden History" series and a number of works under her pen name, Janet Swan, which can be found on her Amazon Author profile.
